We are proud to share that BIOSFERA’s Industrial Doctorate Enric Gomis, Scientific Advisors Oscar Serrano and Nicole Foster, together with BIOSFERA and international collaborators, have published a landmark study in Nature Communications: “Global estimates of seagrass blue carbon stocks in biomass and net primary production.”

This research provides the first global inventory of carbon stored in seagrass biomass and the carbon fixed annually through net primary production (NPP). Drawing on data from 66 countries and encompassing diverse seagrass life-history strategies, the study reveals that:

• 24–40 Tg C of carbon is stored globally in seagrass biomass
• Seagrass NPP reaches 83–137 Tg C per year, placing it among the highest of photosynthetic ecosystems
• Carbon storage varies by up to 800-fold across bioregions
• Despite their relatively limited global coverage, seagrass meadows play a significant role in the global carbon cycle

Beyond advancing our understanding of blue carbon ecosystems, this work strengthens the scientific foundation for incorporating seagrass ecosystems into carbon crediting schemes and informing effective climate mitigation strategies.
